With summer and vacations in full swing, here are some helpful tips to keep you home safe while away:

  • Notify reliable neighbors or friends: Inform the person about your absence and provide them with your contact information.

  • Use timers for lights and electronics: Set timers for lights, TVs, or radios to create the illusion that someone is home. This can deter potential burglars by making it appear as if the house is occupied.

  • Secure all doors and windows: Double-check that all doors and windows are securely locked before you leave. Consider reinforcing them with deadbolts or security bars for an added layer of protection.

  • Don't advertise your absence on social media: Avoid posting about your vacation plans on social media platforms. Broadcasting your absence can attract unwanted attention and make your home a target for burglars.

  • Arrange for mail and package delivery: Contact the post office to hold your mail or ask a neighbor to collect it for you. A pile of unattended mail or packages can signal that the house is unoccupied.

  • Maintain your property: Arrange for someone to mow your lawn, and water your plants. A well-maintained property gives the impression that someone is home.

  • Disconnect electronics and appliances: Unplug non-essential electronics and appliances to prevent power surges and reduce the risk of electrical fires.

  • Keep valuables secure: Store valuable items, such as jewelry or important documents, in a safe deposit box or a secure location within your home.

  • Consider a house-sitter: If possible, hire a house-sitter to stay at your home while you're away. Their presence can deter burglars and ensure that your property is well-looked after.

Remember, each home and situation is unique, so assess your specific needs and take appropriate measures to protect your house while you're on vacation.
