Winter has arrived! With that being said make sure you stay prepared to avoid in potential losses and to stay safe.

  • 1. Stay Informed

    • Monitor Weather Reports: Keep an eye on local news, weather apps, or alerts for updates on the winter weather conditions, including snow, ice, and temperatures.

    2. Safety First

    • Avoid Travel if Possible: If conditions are severe, stay off the roads. If travel is necessary, inform someone of your route and estimated arrival time.

    • Emergency Kit: Have an emergency kit in your vehicle that includes blankets, a flashlight, food, water, a first aid kit, and any necessary medications.

    3. Home Preparation

    • Stay Indoors: Limit your time outside during severe winter weather to avoid exposure to cold temperatures and wind chill.

    • Heat Safely: If you lose power, use alternative heating sources safely. Ensure proper ventilation if using generators or fuel-burning appliances to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

    • Check on Vulnerable Neighbors: If you have elderly or vulnerable neighbors, check on them to ensure they have adequate heat and supplies.

    4. Property Protection

    • Clear Snow and Ice: Regularly clear walkways, driveways, and steps to prevent ice accumulation and reduce slip hazards.

    • Prevent Ice Dams: If you notice ice forming on your roof or gutters, take steps to remove snow and ensure proper drainage to prevent ice dams, which can lead to water damage.

    5. Vehicle Safety

    • Stay in Your Vehicle if Stranded: If you get stuck in snow or ice, remain in your vehicle for safety. Run the engine intermittently for heat and ensure the exhaust pipe is clear of snow to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.

    • Check Tire and Fluid Levels: Ensure that your vehicle has good winter tires, and check antifreeze and windshield wiper fluid levels to ensure proper function in winter conditions.
